Scarlett Woodman

Scarlett collects both her imagery and materials from her surrounding landscape, mostly that of the Kent countryside just outside her studio.  She takes discarded objects, usually old building materials, which she feels reflect and capture a sense of that landscape. She then gives them a second life by piecing them together to create her artworks.

Scarlett uses a combination of processes to create these works, but it usually involves scratching back into the surface of the material. She is drawn their textures, colours and forms, particularly how these are created and enhanced as they deteriorate over time. She often paints the objects white before scratching into them, which has a real softening effect. Thus turning these hard, harsh and heavy objects, into forms which appear much more delicate.

Trees are the main imagery of Scarlett’s work as she feels they are the perfect symbol of the strength and resilience of nature. Through her work she reflects on the uniqueness of each induvial tree, how the landscape around it has changed over it’s long lifetime, and continues to change with ever increasing speed. It is this fragility of the natural world, as well as its strength and beauty, which Scarlett tries to capture in her work. By contrasting these celebratory images of nature, with the deteriorated, discarded objects on which they sit.
